The Consequences of Choosing Sin

The Consequences of Choosing Sin

It is obvious that the grace of God is overwhelming, for all of us. Does this mean we can continue in sin, while ignoring the repeated call from the Father to live holy, as He is holy? No. There is a big difference between struggling with sin, with a heart that longs for purity and victory, and choosing the way of sin, from a rebellious heart. Weakness is not the same as wickedness. Both result in sin, but with a different outcome.

Weakness hates sin, wickedness loves sin.

When we choose sin from a wicked heart, in rebellion and unwillingness to be holy and pure, then the Lord makes it clear there is punishment awaiting. The apostles made it very clear that those who choose to continue in sin, thereby ignoring the grace of God that calls them to be holy, have no place in the kingdom of God:

‘Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.’ (1 Corinthians 6:8,9)

‘Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.’ (Galatians 6:6-8)

The grace of God empowers us to overcome sin. But it is also the Lord’s call to holiness, that helps us understand how serious deliberate sin is in the eyes of God and how important His demand is that we live in His light, just as He is light.

‘Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-16)
